Other Events, Services and Blessings

Besides our normal service, training and education programs, our Temple offers services for the many special occasions that are a part of our lives, such as weddings, memorials for our loved ones and blessings. These services are an auxiliary part of Buddhist Practice and should not replace your main practice. This page will list a few of the services available at the Nichiren Buddhist Sangha of New England. Dana (donation from the heart) is expected for the below services. Some services may have suggested amounts (ask the minister). You do not have to be a member of the Temple to receive most of these services. Please contact the minister for more information if you are interested.

Blessing Services -
Their are many occasions for blessings. Blessings are done for newborns, children, pets, when someone is ill and for homes. We also bless automobiles and tools of your trade. If something is happening in your life, talk to the minister about having a blessing.
Marriage -
Even though Buddhism teaches no attachment, weddings are performed. The service can be long or very simple depending on the couples' wishes. If you are wishing to get married, please talk with the minister. (click the title word Marriage above to read more about marriages in Nichiren Buddhism)
Pregnancy -
Blessing service is available if you are planning to have children and/or are pregnant. After the child is born, blessings can be done for the newborn. The big points of a childs life can also be times for blessings and celebration at the Temple.
Funeral and Memorial Service -
The Buddhist tradition performs funeral and memorial rites that include many ancient traditions. If you have experienced the lost of a loved one and would like to have a funeral or memorial service performed, please call or visit the minister. Our tradition has many services to commemorate and honor those we have lost.
Jukai (joining the Sangha) -
Jukai is performed at this Temple two times a year in the spring at the Founder's day service in April and Nichiren Shonin's memorial service (Oeshiki) in October. Following the standard which was set by Nichiren Order of North America, we wait a minimum of six months before performing Jukai. There is no rush to become a member. It is only performed when the person is ready and has enough time to make a informed decision. During the introductory period the new person will learn and work with the minister.
At the Jukai, Omandala Gohonzon (object of veneration) is given to the practitioner for their home altar. The new member takes vows to uphold the Lotus Sutra and follow the directions of Nichiren Shonin. If you feel you would like to become a member please talk to the minister.
Ofuda -
Ofuda are small talismans or amulets used for many reasons by those who practice the path. They are a skillful means to help us along the sometimes difficult road to enlightenment. It you are finding yourself in a situation that is difficult, receiving a Ofuda may help. There are many types and styles depending on your situation. To name a few of the ofuda available: they are for business, school, illness, autos, pets, children, pregnancy, etc . . .

Home -
The minister can perform home blessings. These may include Feng Shui consultation and clearing of the home (house or apartment). Usually the minister will visit or ask for a layout of the home with notation of the home's orientation along the cardinal directions. The minister will give you a list of supplies before the blessing. If you are far from the Temple, we can still arrange for a blessing. Dana (donation) for the travel will be expected for coming to your home. Again, ask the minister if you are interested in these services.
Please remember that you can talk to the minister anytime a situation comes up in your life, good or bad. The minister may suggest a blessing, change in your practice or a Ofuda to help you along the path. The Sangha is here to help all who travel the path.
